International Baccalaureate is a rigorous academic program similar to the Advanced Placement program. Many colleges offer course credit for students who have taken IB courses.
“For our district, IB is yet another step we are taking to prepare graduates for acceptance to more competitive colleges as well as for academic scholarships,” said Superintendent Edward Kliszus.
Port Chester High School will be the fifth high school in Westchester County to offer an IB Diploma Program. The others are Dobbs Ferry High School, EF International Academy in Tarrytown, Harrison High School and Yonkers High School. There are 51 high schools in New York with IB Diploma Programs.
In anticipation of the authorization, 128 juniors and seniors signed up to take IB courses during the spring's class selection period. IB courses will be offered in English, history, French, Italian, Spanish, math, math studies, visual arts, music, biology and chemistry. Students will have the option of pursuing an IB diploma or taking individuals IB courses. Students who seek an IB diploma will have to complete IB courses in six subjects, take an interdisciplinary course called Theory of Knowledge, write a 4,000 word essay and complete service activities.
“This is an exciting opportunity for all Port Chester students. IB brings true student-centered learning. Importantly, it promotes the concise and thoughtful writing abilities and critical thinking skills needed for success in the 21st Century,” said Port Chester High School Principal Mitchell Combs.
Port Chester High School was authorized to offer the courses after a two-year process, during which teachers and counselors received IB training. The guidance department also discussed the courses with students and parents.
