RYE BROOK, N.Y. - Registered Republicans in New York state's newly redrawn 17th Congressional District took to the polls on Tuesday and cast their vote for who they believe should represent them on the Republican ticket in November's congressional election against veteran Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-Harrison).
Republicans taking to the polls have a choice between current Rye Town Supervisor Joe Carvin and congressional candidate and Hawthorne resident Jim Russell.
At the polls in Rye Brook, resident and Town of Rye Republican Chairman Dan Paniccia said his support lies with hometown candidate Carvin.
"I was lucky enough to give Joe's nomination speech, and Joe is perfectly suited to be in Congress," Paniccia said.
Paniccia also spoke about the importance of voting in primaries and said that the low voter turnout likely had a lot to do with the decision to move the primary elections to June, for the first time in 2012.
"It's frustrating when a lot of people don't vote, because it doesn't always give a true indication of the party's stance," Paniccia said. "Hopefully, the majority rule still applies and the candidate most representative gets elected."
