The incident took place in Stamford around noon Thursday when a patrol officer was flagged down on the report of a person being hit by a car on Stillwater Avenue and Virgil Street, said the Stamford Police.
The officer responded to the scene and found an 83-year-old school crossing guard on the ground next to two vehicles. He was alert but in pain, they said.
The driver that struck the crossing guard, identified as Iris Morales-Cante, 18, told the officer she came out of Virgil Street and made a right hand turn onto Stillwater Avenue.
Somehow she lost control when she turned striking the crossing guard who was standing by the left front fender of his vehicle which was parked at the right curb, the department said.
The vehicle, after striking the crossing guard, came to rest against a city light pole on the sidewalk.
The crossing guard was transported to Stamford Hospital where he was treated for bruises and scrapes. The crossing guard was wearing his reflective vest but was not in the act of crossing school children and at no time were any children in danger.
Morales-Cante was issued tickets for driving without a license and failure to drive in proper lane.
Police said the collision comes at a time when the department is in the process of conducting a needs assessment of all 80 school crossings in the City.
