The Greenwich Fire Department began receiving multiple 911 calls regarding the fire at 15 Locust Road around 11:52 p.m. Thursday, said Greenwich Fire Department Assistant Chief Robert Kick.

"You know when you have numerous calls that the fire must be fully involved," Kick said.

When Glenville Fire Engine 4 arrived on scene within 10 minutes, the entire house was engulfed in flames, Kick said.

Kick said the owner of the home, one of several on the property, was not inhabited, making it easier for the more than 60 firefighters on scene to attack the blaze.

"The flames were so intense that the most we could do was keep exposures under control and let the fire burn so as not to endanger any firefighters," he said.

Firefighters poured water on the flames, but the entire fire was not out until early in the morning, with crews finally leaving the scene around 5:30 a.m. Friday, Kick said.

The scene was under the direction of Deputy Chief Thomas Zack, Kick added.

"He did an excellent job directing and keeping everyone safe," he said.

The home is a total loss, with a section of the upper part of the home collapse to the first floor.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by Fire Marshall Rob Natale. It should take three to four weeks to determine a cause for the fire.
