PORT CHESTER, N.Y. -- Eight Port Chester paid firefighters remain without jobs even through Mayor Dennis Pilla changed his mind during a recent meeting and voted to reinstate the firefighters, according to Lohud.com.
The eight firefighters were fired last month after the village Board of Trustees voted to eliminate all paid firefighter positions and shift to an all-volunteer department as a cost cutting measure, said Lohud.com.
Pilla said during the meeting that he changed his mind because he was worried about response times and had received information about a federal program that would help pay the firefighters.
The department currently has 150 interior-trained volunteer firefighters and another 150 exterior-trained volunteers, added Lohud.com.
