The fire began at about 9 p.m. on the second floor of 49 Poningo St., according to the Port Chester Fire Department. The flames spread through the building and to the attached building, 51 Poningo St.
The Port Chester Fire Department arrived quickly and put out the fire, the fire department said. Two firefighters were transported to Greenwich Hospital to be treated for heat exhaustion, the department said.
Six families were living in the three-story building at the time of the fire, including eight children. Nobody was injured in the fire, and village officials and the Red Cross were working with the residents to help them find temporary housing.
The cause of the fire was still under investigation, but it was believed to have been caused by an extension cord used to power an air conditioner.
