John Mayo, 80, Longtime Port Chester Resident

PORT CHESTER, N.Y. -- John Mayo, a long-time resident of Port Chester, died on Sept. 28 in Delray Beach, Fla. He was 80.

Mayo was born on Aug. 12, 1934, in Port Chester to the Philip and Ester Meo.  

Mayo attended Port Chester High School. He was in the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division and later worked as a sheet rock taper.  He married Clara Valona of Port Chester in 1973.

They moved to Delray Beach, Fla. in 1995. After moving to Delray Beach, John worked for JCD Sports Group for over 19 years working initially at Delray Beach Golf Club and then transferring to Lakeview Golf Club when the City bought the course in 1996. 

Mayo was an avid golfer and played weekly even until his last days. He was proud of his military service.

Mayo is survived by his children; Dominick Mayo of Mahopac, N.Y., Patricia LaValle (husband Ferdinando) of Stamford, Conn.; and John Mayo, Jr., (wife Anita) and five grandchildren; Christina Mayo, Marissa Mayo, Dominick Mayo, Alexander LaValle and John Mayo. John was predeceased by his wife Clara; his brothers; Ralph Mayo, Frank Mayo and Phil Mayo; his sisters; Laura Clifford Holloway, Pauline Mayo and Pauline Howland and parents.

Family and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass, Friday Oct.  10, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. , at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Port Chester, NY.  Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Rye Brook.
