Erdmann Riedel, 82, Of Port Chester, Longtime Architect

PORT CHESTER, N.Y. -- Erdmann K.H. Riedel died Wednesday, Sept. 30 at the age of 82.

He is survived by his wife, Adele; four children, Lesa Riedel-Curtis of Port Chester, Steve Riedel and his wife, Catherine of Croton, Tina Dupuis and her husband, Dale of Wallkill, and Jonathan Riedel and his wife, Rhonda of Pleasantville; as well as five grandchildren, Joseph, Emily, Christopher, Edgar and Elizabeth. 

Riedel was born March 10, 1933, in Rauten, Germany (now Poland) to Marta Rieger and Paul Riedel. When he was 2, the family relocated to Milwaukee, Wisc., where he eventually met and married Adele Ellenbecker in 1955.

In 1959, Riedel graduated with honors from the University of Illinois with a degree in architecture, having received both design and engineering awards and earning membership in the Gargoyle Society. 

At Illinois, he also joined the Army ROTC program and served in the Army Corps of Engineers, earning the rank of 1st Lieutenant. 

In 1961, the couple moved to New York, where Riedel began a long and successful career with Warner Burns Toan & Lunde Architects & Planners in New York City, eventually becoming a senior partner. 

He loved to sail and spend summer vacations in Lake George, camping on Waltonian Island. 

There will be a memorial gathering from 3-7 p.m. Saturday at 134 Betsey Brown Road, Port Chester. Family and friends are welcome to attend and to celebrate Riedel’s life and spirit.
