Union officials from Transport Workers Union Local 100 announced on Thursday that school bus drivers would go on strike beginning on Monday if they couldn’t reach an agreement on a new contract with their employer, First Mile Square.
First Mile Square has bus routes in Yonkers, Mount Vernon, New Rochelle and Mamaroneck. Drivers, monitors and mechanics working for the company have been doing so without a contract for several months.
Local 100 represents approximately 600 employees. Their demands include one paid sick day a year, an annual 3 percent pay raise and a guaranteed 25-hour work week. Union officials said that they are seeking to bring their pay grade up to the standard of other Westchester bus companies.
In a statement released Thursday, Union President Tony Utano said that “we will continue to negotiate to reach a fair deal, but not indefinitely. We are running out of patience and First Mile Square is running out of time.”
