Rye Brook Mayor Paul S. Rosenberg said, "If someone was looking to open a gun shop in Rye Brook, this proposed local law would regulate where it could potentially open, taking into account the distance from schools."

Last month, Louis Zacchio opened a gun shop at the rear of Harrison Mall, 261 Halstead Ave., as reported here by Daily Voice.

L&L Sports' closest retail competition is in Mount Vernon and Elmsford. Other gun shops in the Hudson Valley are located in Carmel and Patterson, N.Y.

Zacchio's gun shop is in the heart of Harrison's downtown shopping district and is located about a block from Parsons Elementary School, prompting nearly 3,500 people to sign a petition opposing it.

At its meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 13, Rosenberg said the village board is expected to refer a proposed local law to Rye Brook's planning board for report and recommendations.

"Then within a month or two it will come back to us for a final vote," Rosenberg said on Monday.

The mayor called the proposed law "totally precautionary," saying no one has discussed plans of opening a gun store in Rye Brook.
