The plan is being put in place because the village can no longer support the sewer infrastructure using only funds provided by property taxes. All residential, commercial and tax-exempt property owners in the village will receive a separate bill for sewer service that is based on their consumption of water.
“Municipalities in New York and across the nation are increasingly moving to the concept of user fees,” Village Manager Christopher Steers said in a statement. “These fees allow municipalities to allocate costs more fairly among the various segments of the community that are using the services.”
Village Treasurer Leonie Douglas said the typical taxpayer should see a "modest reduction in the amount paid for sewer service."
The average household cost for sewer service should be approximately $156 a year, based on the amount of water used.
