The frightening incident occurred on a recent afternoon when Greenwich Firefighter Matt Gordiski saw a crowd gathered at a car near Willett Avenue and North Main Street in Port Chester, according to the report.
Gordiski hopped out of his car and ran across traffic to the chaotic scene, where people were trying to help the boy, who was unconscious and going into respiratory and cardiac arrest, the Free Press said.
The 4-year-old boy had been playing with the car's sunroof and gotten his neck caught, the story said.
Taking command of the situation, Gordiski began performing chest compressions and continued until Port Chester/Rye EMS personnel arrived, Greenwich Free Press said.
Physicians and EMS said Gordiski saved the boy's life, the story said.
A letter commending Gordiski — written by Port Chester Police Chief Richard Conway to Greenwich Fire Chief Peter Siecienski — was read at Thursday's Greenwich Board of Selectmen meeting, the Free Press said.
