PORT CHESTER, N.Y. -- The landmark Summerfield Methodist Church in Port Chester has been sold to a Pentecostal congregation for $1,150,000.

The Assembly of God World Vision Ministries of Port Chester signed a sales contract July 22, according to legal papers filed in the state Supreme Court on Aug. 21.

The Methodists stopped using the church for worship in 2012.

The distinctive building at 225 King St. resembles a medieval castle and is near the Port Chester train station. The church was named after John Summerfield, a well-known early Methodist preacher. The congregation worshiped at the King Street location since 1831 when the original Summerfield church was built, according to the Methodist Church's website. The sale needs court approval because New York state law requires charities to get permission to sell their assets.
