Gautemala native Noel Lopez-Reyes of Port Chester, whose children have disabilities, turned himself into ICE in Manhattan on Thursday and will be given eight more months stateside, according to a News12 report.
According to Lopez-Reyes, his entire family is dependent upon his economic and emotional support. His son Shaun suffers from multiple disabilities, including a "severe form of Spina bifida, scoliosis, deformities of limbs and brain abnormalities.
"He needs me by his side as he continues to fight for his health and life," he noted on a digital petition that garnered more than 500 signatures of support.
Lopez-Reyes had requested asylum from immigration officials, which had previously been denied. According to the report, Lopez-Reyes has been in America since 1992, when he fled a war-torn Guatemala. It is unclear what happens to he and his family at the end of the eight-month delay.
