PORT CHESTER, N.Y. – Holiday celebrations at the Carver Center in Port Chester will begin Sunday when nearby community groups and organizations team up to provide food and drinks, entertainment and, especially, gifts to those who otherwise may not have them.

Children and families served by the center’s Food Pantry, Head Start and After-School programs will receive gifts of hoodies, hats, gloves and an age-appropriate book to promote literacy for kids 12 and younger. Ages 13 and older will receive gift cards to make their own purchases.

The Carver Center is the primary needs-based organization in Port Chester. It offers programs to meet the needs of all residents, especially underprivileged youth.

“We’re getting help from all over the place," Alex Chavarria, director of the Food Pantry at the Carver Center, said in an interview late last month. "We have been overwhelmed with the amount of donations we’ve gotten.”

Groups such as Children’s Hope Chest, the Rye YMCA and Reach Out Rye, a Rye Middle School community service club, collected gift donations for the event over the past few weeks. Students from the middle school, Boy Scout Troop Rye Pack 2 and Kids S.P.A.C.E. of Rye members will serve food and beverages for the party.

“These events are not an end to our holiday gift drive, however. Due to unforeseen circumstances, such as Hurricane Sandy, we extended the soft deadline and expect donations from other charitable organizations throughout the week,” said Jill Sheppard, a co-chair of Carver Center’s Board of Directors’ Volunteer Committee, in a press release.

The Carver Center is located at 400 Westchester Ave. in Port Chester. For more information on its programs, check out its website at or call 914-939-4464. The Carver Center is always seeking donations of food, clothing, and volunteers.
