To the Editor,
My name is Elizabeth Hourigan and I am writing to support the re-election of Blanca Lopez as President of the Port Chester Board of Education.
Ms. Lopez has been a member of the Port Chester Board of Education for the past three years. In that time, the Port Chester schools have seen great change.
As a member of the Board, Ms. Lopez recruited and hired Dr. Kliszus, our new superintendent. Teachers and administrators alike are now being evaluated under the new Annual Professional Performance Review system to certify their quality of instruction. At the elementary level, children are working with the Math In Focus curriculum, and the high school now has an International Baccalaureate Program. Lastly, since New York State adopted the new tax levy cap, her experience passing the last two school budgets during economic uncertainty will be invaluable. We continue to need an experienced, engaged, and committed leader willing to fight for our childrens educational interests.
Not only is Ms. Lopez President of the Board, but a parent as well. She wants what is best for our children, and works hard to provide it. Approximately 75 percent of the student body in Port Chester is ethnically Hispanic. Ms. Lopez is the only member of the Board bilingual in English and Spanish. Additionally, she works for a local non-profit organization to address the towns growing need for affordable housing, She sees first hand the economic hardships these Port Chester residents face, and is committed to making a real difference.
Ms, Lopez is not only an asset to our schools, but our community. She has my support as she runs for re-election as President of the Board of Education.
