Sleigh Bells To Play Port Chester's Capitol Theatre Friday

PORT CHESTER, N.Y. – As Brooklyn-based duo Sleigh Bells headlines at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester this Friday, its main songwriter Derek Miller says concertgoers should be ready for sensory overload.

“Our goal live is not so much to make people think but to make people feel,” he said. “Even if it just obliterates your mind for an hour. That’s just the live show I appreciated when I would go and have my hair blown back. … Our goals are not necessarily lofty, but I think they’re solid and unpretentious. We just hope to provide an incredible night.”

Miller collaborates with Alexis Krauss on vocals. Krauss was a member of the Disney teen pop group RubyBlue as a teenager, while Miller played guitar in the post-hardcore band Poison the Well. The sound the two create in Sleigh Bells is a far cry from Miller’s former band, a change he attributes to evolving tastes.

“At 19, a lot of kids my age were listening to hardcore, but after awhile at 22 or 23, your listening habits change and so did my message and my output as well,” he said. “I developed an interest in production and beat-making and music-sample material.”

By 2010, Sleigh Bells signed to M.I.A.’s label N.E.E.T., which was the same year it released its debut full-length album "Treats." From there, the duo played Pitchfork’s summer music festival and set out on a North American tour.

Earlier this year, the duo released "Reign of Terror" and started touring again. Miller says they already have three completed songs and sketches for a dozen more for their next album, slated for a 2013 release. If there’s a creative wall, Miller says he has not hit it.

“I don’t know how anybody else reacts to their record, but my reactions to them can be violent. It makes me desperate to do something new or better or feel I’m moving forward in some way creatively,” he said. “It makes me hungry and ambitious because I know we can do better, and I think that’s why we’ll have three records in the three years."

Most recently, Sleigh Bells’ music was featured in a Victoria’s Secret commercial. The mainstream success has made his bank account feel better, Miller says.

“If they want to use our music then go for it. Someone forwarded the link of the commercial to us, and it’s scantily clad women dancing around to one of our songs. What’s not to love? I think it’s great,” he said.

Sleigh Bells will play Friday, Oct. 5. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the show starts at 8. The 18-and-over event will have a general admission standing room only floor and a reserved seated Loge and Balcony. Reserved Loge and Balcony tickets will not have access to the general admission floor.

Admission is $25 in advance and $30 on the day of the show. For tickets to Sleigh Bells click here. For more information on the band check out its website.
