Mostly sunny skies early in the day are expected to give way to a storm system that could bring thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Friday.
High temperatures for much of the area will hover near 90 degrees.
The chance for showers and thunderstorms continues to grow as the evening moves on with the greatest possibility for heavy rains coming between 8 p.m. Friday and 2 a.m. Saturday, according to the Weather Service. Total rain fall could reach between a quarter- and a half-inch in some areas.
The Weather Service has also issued an Air Quality Alert from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday.
The alert, issued for the third consecutive day, affects Rockland and Westchester counties along with New York City's five boroughs.
According to the alert, the outdoor air quality for much of the region is expected to contain serious amounts of ozone at ground level, making for potential health hazards.
Those with very young children and those with respiratory ailments are urged to be particularly mindful of the forecast Friday and limit activities accordingly.
Those not required to participate in "strenuous outdoor physical activity" are urged to reduce or skip entirely such behaviors.
According to the weather service, the chance of rain is expected to linger through the weekend with the possibility of heavy storms dissipating by Sunday afternoon.
High temperatures Saturday are likely to hit the high 70s for much of the region while Sunday is expected to be a bit warmer with temperatures in the mid-80s.
