The host seized the momentum and was on the verge of a major run. However, Blind Brook senior and captain Ally Silfen stepped forward and halted any such notion.
Silfen scored five consecutive points and finished with a team-leading 21 points as Blind Brook defeated Hamilton, 58-50, to close out the regular season.
Blind Brook concluded 15-3 and finished second in the league behind powerhouse Ossining. Silfen also finished with 11 rebounds. Jackie Lavitt added 16 points, eight rebounds and four steals, and Lea Saliba had 11 points and five assists.
Blind Brook coach Manny Martinez knew what to call once Hamilton came out quick in the final quarter.
“Ally has been our go-to player throughout her career,” Martinez said. “Ally has been doing it for five years and has over 1,200 points.”
After Jasmine Robinson opened with a basket and a three-pointer, closing the lead to 45-36, Silfen stepped up. She finished off a pick-and-roll with Saliba, then stepped to the perimeter to swish a three-pointer.
Silfen, who will attend Bowdoin in fall and play basketball, said the Blind Brook players had heard about possible injuries to Hamilton, but they did not allow it to affect their focus. Blind Brook wanted to close with a win and go into the Section 1 Class B Basketball Championships with momentum.
“We were expecting them to be on the floor for the game,” Silfen said of the injured Hamilton seniors and leading scorers, Maia Hood and Tiffany Corselli. “This was a huge game for us. Hamilton has always been our rival since eighth grade, and one our losses this season was to them. The win gave us second place in the league.”
Blind Brook will await the seeding meeting for the Section 1 Girls' Basketball Championship, Once it receives its seed, Blind Brook will focus on a return trip to the Westchester County Center for the Final Four.
