“I knew I didn’t play well in the first half, and I needed to get back in there,” said the 6-foot-8 Schaenman. “Coach always tells us we can’t be an invisible man on the court so I knew the team needed me to do my part.”
Schaenman responded with eight points in the second half, including a basket in the final seconds to seal Blind Brook’s 48-45 win over Tuckahoe in a Section 1 boys basketball game.
“That was my wake-up call,” Schaenman said of not opening the third quarter with the starters. “Coach definitely thought I was not playing up to par.”
When he entered the game in the third quarter, he answered with an offensive follow. A few possessions later, Schaenman received a pass in the low post, spun left and laid the ball in.
Schaenman also turned in a key defensive play with Blind Brook leading by three points and three minutes remaining in the game. Tuckahoe’s Rob Kiernan grabbed an offensive rebound and went right up, but Schaenman slid over and blocked the shot.
“I was trying to help with the rebound so when I saw him get it, he was loading up so I went over and was able to block it,” Schaenman said.
Blind Brook coach Mike Welsh credited Schaenman with improving in the second half, especially on the blocked shot.
“We all know what Brennan is capable of when he asserts himself,” Welsh said. “The blocked shot was another example of Brennan's making plays in the game. He came across and provided great help defense.”
Sam Adler scored 14 of his team-high 17 points in the first half, and Cal Snisky added 10.
Shyheim Nixon led Tuckahoe with a game-high 18 points, and Maurice Hollis finished with 10 points.
