Rye Brook Drops District 20 Baseball Opener

RYE, N.Y. – Harrison was hitting the ball hard but did not have much to show for it through two innings of its District 20 Little League Baseball Minor’s Tournament game with Rye Brook.

Rye Brook made a few fine defensive plays to deny Harrison hits. This would all change in the third inning as Harrison’s offense began finding the gaps.

Harrison strung together four extra-base hits and erupted in the third inning on its way to a 10-0 victory over Rye Brook at Disbrow Park.

Harrison will play Scarsdale in a winner’s bracket semifinal, Thursday, 8 p.m. at Gedney Field in White Plains. Scarsdale earned a berth with an 8-3 win over Dobbs Ferry, Sunday.

Justin Altamuro initiated Harrison’s seven-run third inning with a lead-off double. Winning pitcher Dante Girardi doubled in a run and would score on Ben Seibel’s two-run homer. Later in the inning, Daniel Hirshorn singled in Anthony Mastrogiacomo, who also singled.

“We started to get pumped up and when we get pumped up, we hit the ball better,” said Altamuro, 10, and a sixth-grader-to-be at Louis M. Klein Middle School. “It’s pretty amazing considering we are a young team, but to come out and hit the ball like that is good.”

Seibel, who had bounced into a fielder’s choice in his first at bat, drilled a 1-2 pitch over the fence in left field.

“I put my regular swing on it, got under it a little and was able to pull it,” Seibel said. “I thought it was gone as soon as I hit it because I felt I hit it on the sweet spot.”

The seven runs increased Harrison’s lead to 8-0, which was more than enough for Girardi, who allowed one hit in four innings and struck out 10. David Rednick had the Rye Brook hit, a bunt single to lead off the third.

Rye Brook would load the bases in the third, with no outs, but Girardi recorded consecutive strikeouts and then assisted on the third out, which came in a rundown.

“Dante was throwing strikes and he was throwing very fast,” Seibel said.

Girardi finished with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored. Altamuro also singled and scored twice. Michael Hoffman, who pitched the fifth inning, and Riley Lefebvre also doubled.
