Port Chester Wins Twice in Wrestling Tournament

PURCHASE, N.Y. -- Port Chester was facing a challenge one match into its 2011-12 wrestling season.Scarsdale rallied to beat Port Chester in the first match of the 36th annual Tony Carlucci Dual-Meet Tournament Friday at Purchase College. Senior Joey Rodriguez and the veterans were wondering how the team, missing a few starters and with underclassmen in the lineup, would respond.Port Chester bounced back to defeat Westlake and Eastchester and conclude day one with a 2-1 record.Wrestling will resume Saturday at 9:30 a.m. with the championship match and other place matches, scheduled for 2:45 p.m.Port Chester had the lead midway through the match, but Scarsdale finished strong with a 43-30 win. Following the match, the Rams knew what had to be done.“We had to shake that off and go out and win our next match,” Rodriguez said. “It was also important for us to show the next wrestlers that we could not put our heads down after a loss.”The Rams opened a big lead against Westlake and cruised.“John Guido, one of our captains, beat an all-section wrestler and Diego Gerome bumped up from 126 to 132 and he got a win, I was really impressed with that. And Marcelo Urquiza wrestled really well against a sectional champ,” Rodriguez said.
