Port Chester Football Win Would Earn Playoff Spot

PORT CHESTER, N.Y. – The senior class members of the Port Chester varsity football team are hoping they can be a part of something no Port Chester squad has done for the past 10 years – qualify for the Section 1 Class A Football Championships.

Port Chester will host Saunders at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, with the winner earning a playoff berth.

“This will be the most important game and one of the most meaningful games we’ve played in my high school career,” Port Chester senior Leo Evangelista said. “We want to be the first team to make the playoffs after 10 years, and if we win, we are in.”

Port Chester, 4-2, enters the game off a loss to arch-rival Mamaroneck in Week Six, while Saunders is 5-1 after edging Spring Valley, 19-18.

Evangelista and the team understand why they lost.

“We came into that game very hyped and then we missed blocks on offense and reads on defense,” Evangelista said. “We were angry with the mental mistakes we committed.”

Evangelista said the team is experiencing a very good season and the Rams want it to continue in the playoffs. Port Chester has focused on defense in practice this week.

“Watching them on film, we are focusing on their quarterback and halfback,” Evangelista said. “We have to make sure we have both of them locked up. We’ve focused on it because we felt we were a little faulty on defense last week.”
