Port Chester Bills Fan Disappointed By First Round NFL Draft Pick

PORT CHESTER, N.Y. – Port Chester’s Gabe Newmann was disappointed the Buffalo Bills didn’t select potential game-changer quarter back Johnny Manziel in the first round of the NFL Draft on Thursday and isn’t confident in his team’s ability to contend this coming season.

The Bills traded up to the fourth overall pick in a deal with the Cleveland Browns and selected wide receiver Sammy Watkins out of Clemson. Cleveland later selected Manziel, better known as “Johnny Football,” out of Texas A&M with the 22nd pick.

“I don’t expect much from the Bills this year,” Newmann, a Buffalo native who lives in Port Chester, said. “Give it a couple of years and maybe they’ll be contenders again.”

Newmann may not want to watch too much of his Bills this season, but won’t have much of a choice since he is surrounded by big screen televisions constantly playing NFL games as an employee at the Port Chester Buffalo Wild Wings.

“There’s no way to not watch it,” he said.

Like the Bills, the Giants picked a wide receiver, Odell Bechkam from LSU with the 12th overall pick.

“Great hands and great after the catch,” Rye Brook resident Ray Arlen said of Beckham. “And I think with the new offensive coordinator, he likes to get the ball in the guys’ hands and let them get yards after carry.”

Arlen wanted the Giants to get 6-foot 5-inch tall Mike Evans, the wide receiver out of Texas A&M because he is a bigger target than the 5-foot 11-inch Beckham. Evans was taken by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the seventh pick.

He said he thought the Jets would have taken an offensive player. Instead, the beleaguered team took corner Calvin Pryor out of Louisville with the 18th overall pick.

Bob Santora, a Greenwich residents shopping for a new golf club at NY Golf in Port Chester on Friday, said he would have also preferred the Giants take a bigger target, and graded the Beckham pick as a B.

“I think the kid has talent. But, with (Victor) Cruz, they got a lot of little receivers already,” he said. “When they won the Super Bowl they had Plexico Burress and he was 6’5”. Gave teams a lot of trouble.”

Santora said Giants receiver Ruben Randall, who is 6-foot 3-inches tall, needs to step up this year.

With rounds two and three starting at 7 p.m. Friday, Arlen said the Giants should take a tight end and offensive tackle with their second (43) and third round (74) picks, and then take a running back.
