Zhang and Bartholomay moved up two spots after Tuesday's short program. Their total of 110.31 was the 12th best score in the long program. Russia went 1-2 in the pairs, and Germany took third. The U.S. team of Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir finished ninth. Complete results are online.

"We weren't too worried about the placement coming in here because we're a fairly new team,'' Zhang said in a press release distributed Wednesday by U.S. Figure Skating. "We just competed in our first Olympic Games and we handled the pressure really well."

Zhang, a native of New Jersey, formerly trained in Yonkers. She now resides in Ellenton, Fla., and attends the University of South Florida.

Zhang teamed with Bartholomay in May 2011 and finished eighth at their first U.S. Championships. The pair won a bronze at the 2013 U.S. Championships and won silver last month at the U.S. Championships.

Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano was among those wishing the best for Zhang on Facebook.

She was born in Riverdale, and also competed for the Skating Club of New York. Zhang started skating at the age of 7 and won a novice bronze at the 2008 U.S. Championships before moving on to pairs competition.
