Silfen has made three trips to Section 1 Class B Girls Basketball final four at the County Center in her five-year varsity career. The high-scoring forward led Blind Brook to a pair of sectional finals, including the 2013 title game.
For her outstanding achievement, Silfen is The Port Chester Daily Voice February Athlete of the Month.
“As a senior, to play at the County Center, it means a lot to me,” said Silfen, who will attend Bowdoin in September and play basketball. “It is a great feeling to return to the finals two years in a row. It is an incredible experience and to compete for the gold ball is incredible.”
Silfen led Blind Brook in scoring and rebounding. Silfen was equally comfortable down low, using a power move to the basket or stepping to the perimeter and swishing 3-pointers. Silfen was Blind Brook’s first option and despite the added attention she received, the Trojans could always count on her.
She led the team to an 18-4 season. Blind Brook played for the Section 1 Class B title the past two years, but faced powerhouse Irvington, the four-time champs.
Silfen, who was selected to the Class B final four all-tournament team, said she and her teammates raised their game a level when the calendar turned to February.
“I feel the whole team really picked up,” Silfen said. “Coach always stressed that you don’t want to peak in the beginning of the season but in the end, when it really counts.
“We knew that when February came, the games would get tougher, but we became more disciplined. We didn’t want our season to end,” she said.
Silfen led Blind Brook to victories over Briarcliff, in the quarterfinal round and John F. Kennedy Catholic (Somers) in a semifinal. Overall, Blind Brook finished with an 18-4, one of the best in program history.
“This year we had a tremendous season,” Silfen said. “We had great team chemistry. We gave 100 percent every time we stepped on the court.”
