Port Chester High Wins Two Metropolican Theater Awards

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- Pleasantville, Archbishop Stepinac and Brewster won the most awards at Monday night's Metropolitan High School Theater Awards, but many local drama programs returned home as winners.

Port Chester's Liam Herbert won best acting performance by a male and the school won for best lobby display. Charlie Simmons, who played the lead in the school’s production of RENT, performed at Monday night's sold-out ceremony, attended by more than 1,000 students, teachers and parents.

“I couldn't be more proud of Liam and all the nominees from Port Chester. What a fun night we had,'' said Josh Tenzer, high school teacher and producer of RENT.

The lobby display award went to Tenzer, Ruth Goldberg, Amy Simmons and Patrick O'Connor.

Forty-six area high school productions were in the running for 2015 honors. The 17th annual awards ceremony was produced by Nyack’s Helen Hayes Youth Theater at Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains.

Pleasantville High School took home four top prizes, for best production, of "Man of La Mancha;" outstanding actor, James McCarthy as Don Quixote; its music director and student critic.

Host school, Archbishop Stepinac won four honors for its production of "Billy Elliot," a musical by Elton John. Stepinac's Frank Portanova won for best director and Gianna Prignano of Harrison won best actress in a leading role as Billy's ballet teacher. John Guaragna won for best dance performance playing Older Billy.

Brewster High School's production of "Shrek," which had 15 nominations, won three awards including featured ensemble group, stage crew and outstanding duet by Andrew Gordon as Shrek and Sydney Gershon as Fiona.

Amelia Sasson of Mount Kisco, singing for Stepinac, and Valhalla High School's Natalie Bochi tied in the vocal performance category.

Andi Rella of Harrison High School won best acting performance by a female as Gloria in "Damn Yankees."

Edgemont High School's student orchestra and Putnam Valley's chorus also pulled down "Metro" awards.
