PURCHASE, N.Y. -- Purchase College-SUNY has joined the U.S. Department of Energy’s Workplace Charging Challenge — a national partnership program that aims to increase the number of employers offering workplace charging for plug-in electric vehicles, or PEVs, to 500 by 2018.

Purchase is the third organization in Westchester County to join the growing list of nearly 200 employers offering charging stations nationwide and is the second SUNY campus to join the challenge. Through this effort, Purchase College is helping to reduce petroleum use and greenhouse gas emissions, while also providing a valuable employee benefit.

Tom Kelly, senior energy manager at the college, said, “I’m proud that Purchase, which has been selected as one of the 'greenest' schools in the country, continues to demonstrate leadership in workplace sustainability. As an electric vehicle owner myself, I hope we can encourage other drivers to make the switch by providing easy access to charging stations.”

Currently there are four charging stations on campus that can accommodate six vehicles. The charging station installation is just one of many sustainable transportation options available at Purchase College. Other initiatives include real-time bus schedules; zipcars; 511NY Rideshare for commuters; Park 2 Fly, which provides reasonable parking rates and complimentary shuttle service to Westchester Airport; and Broken Spokes, a student-run organization that replaces damaged bicycle tires.
