PORT CHESTER, N.Y. -- Veronica Mazzarri has one main goal in life right now and that's to educate children. "I like to see when that light goes off in their heads," said Mazzarri. "When they get it."
Mazzarri provides after-school tutoring services at the Port Chester-Rye Brook Library seven days a week for small groups of elementary school students.
She assists them with their homework and provides supplemental assignments to improve their performance on state tests. She also works one-on-one with each student and makes the occasional house call when necessary.
One of her principles is to make her services affordable, charging $15 an hour for each student.
"A lot of parents wouldn't be able to afford it otherwise," she said.
Mazzarri has been providing tutoring services in Port Chester since 2009, though she has more than 17 years of teaching experience.
She began her teaching career after receiving her associate's degree in early childhood education in 1993 from Iona College. Mazzarri also spent several years teaching English in Peru. Now she is pursuing a master's degree in teaching from Fordham University. She plans to become a full-time teacher in the Port Chester School District. "I want to be able to help more children," Mazzarri said.
