CultureFix in Manhattan displayed the special education teacher's work as part of the gallery "Rogue Wave" in January. Ruiz featured two paintings, "Indigenous Me 1" and "Indigenous Me 2." The pieces are mixed-media pieces on 24x48 canvas. The show was curated by Nicole M. Salgar and included the works of other New York artists.

"Mr. Ruiz’s works can be viewed in many successful start-up offices throughout Manhattan," representatives said. "Mr. Ruiz overcame many of the challenges facing his middle school students, having to learn English and meet the challenges of paying for his education in order to be a successful teacher and artist. He is a 1992 graduate of Port Chester High School and earned a master’s degree in special education Mercy College and a bachelor's degree in fine arts from Purchase College."
