PORT CHESTER, N.Y. Two students and Port Chester High School have been nominated for Metropolitan High School Theater Awards for their spring musical performance of "All Shook Up."
Rose Veltri, a junior, was nominated for Outstanding Vocal Performance for her role as Sylvia. Her classmate Kim Maguire was recognized for her choreographic skills with a Technical Merit Award nomination. The school was recognized for Outstanding Lobby display for the third year in a row.
Veltri and Maguire started acting and working on productions in community theater long before taking the stage at Port Chester High School. Veltri said the nomination served as a culmination of all the work she has put in over the years.
"I was really honored to be chosen, because I've worked very hard," Veltri said. "It's a very fulfilling feeling."
Maguire, who doesn't fancy herself a dance expert, echoed Veltri's sentiment.
"I was never, like, a big dancer, so to choreograph something, it's a completely different point of view," Maguire said.
Veltri spoke about the challenges and rewards of performing in an offbeat musical that fuses the rhythm and lyrics of Elvis Presley with the characters and depth of Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night."
"I love the music in the show, because I think it's the best remake of Elvis," Veltri said. "I played a character I usually don't, so I got to do something a little different."
As far as the future is concerned, Veltri and Maguire have one eye on next year's performances and another on college theater programs.
"We're looking at colleges now that have both a theater program and a music plan," Veltri said. "So we will always have music with us."
The awards are distributed by the Helen Hayes Youth Theatre in Rockland County, and are intended to "shine a spotlight on the exceptional musical theater productions, talented actors and actresses and devoted creative teams who take to the stage every spring in our local high schools."
The awards ceremony will be held June 4 at the Paramount Center for the Arts in Peekskill. For more information, visit the awards website.
