Port Chester Students Honor Retiring Principal

PORT CHESTER, N.Y. – Students at King Street Elementary school honored retiring King Street Principal Dolores Obuch on Monday with a special presentation assembly. The King Street School PTA also joined in by donating two park benches and two engraved bricks to the school's memory garden in honor of Obuch.

Obuch, who has been principal at King Street since 1995, will be retiring to teach English at SUNY Purchase.

"I stayed here 15 years, I must have loved it," Obuch said. "I never had a bad day here."

The engraved plaques that will go on the bricks have quotes from two of Obuch's favorite authors, James Joyce and Emily Dickinson.

Although Obuch was wowed by the additions to the memory garden, it was the student presentations inside of the gymnasium that really floored her. Each grade delivered a special presentation in the form of a song or poem dedicated to Obuch, most of which centered on the principal's propensity to dole out candy.

The assembly ended with the fifth-graders singing "Time of Your Life" by Green Day.

"I did have the time of my life," Obuch said fielding hugs from students.

Obuch, who was honored by the board of education earlier this month, will be formally honored with a celebration at SUNY Purchase on Monday, Jun. 18.
