Vargas is one of 17 semifinalists in the MetroPCS #makechange competition. She and her fellow semifinalists have already each won a $2,500 college scholarship and are now competing for another $7,500 in tuition money and a $10,000 community grant.
If she wins, Vargas would donate the $10,000 to create a swim team at Port Chester High School. She is an avid swimmer, but the school has no swim team. She would like students who follow her to have that opportunity.
“Talented swimmers are at a disadvantage since our high school funds do not cover the expenses for a swim team,” Vargas wrote in an essay for her “#makechange” application. She has reached out to District Health, Physical Education and Athletics Director Joseph Durney for help in budgeting her proposal. “The $10,000 grant would provide for a year’s program and would set it in motion."
Vargas is a member of the National Honor Society as well as the honor societies for math, science, Spanish and music. She plays on the softball and tennis teams, and is a member of the Color Guard, the Winter Guard, the student senate and the chorus. She also volunteers at the Carver Center and the 21st Century after-school program.
