PORT CHESTER, N.Y. - Port Chester fifth grader Abe Baker-Butler has been named a semifinalist in the 2013 National Geographic Bee . He will compete for the state championship at New York State Museum on April 5.

Baker-Butler won the bee at Bruno M. Ponterio Ridge Street School. The competition was open to all fourth and fifth grade students. He then took a qualifying test and scored within the top 100 students in New York to be invited to compete at the state level.

The winner of the state competition will travel to Washington D.C. in May to compete in the national finals. He or she will also win $100 and "The Complete National Geographic" on DVD.

The first-place national winner will receive a $25,000 scholarship, a lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society and an all-expenses-paid trip to the Galapagos Islands for an up-close encounter with the wildlife and landscapes.

The National Geographic Bee is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. The nation-wide competition was designed to spark student interest in and raise awareness of geography.
