Port Chester School Board Honors Retiring Principal

PORT CHESTER, N.Y. — The Port Chester-Rye Union Free Board of Education honored retiring King Street Elementary School Principal Dolores Obuch at its meeting Wednesday inside the school's auditorium.

Obuch, who has been the Principal at King Street since 1996, deflected the praise to her colleagues and students.

"Most of all, I thank the children of King Street School who made me happy, made me laugh every day. King Street was a wonderful place to work," Obuch said. "I enjoyed every minute of my time here."

After Obuch delivered King Street's annual report to the board, the school's PTA Presidents Deirdre Pascale and Cathy Rosenfeld presented Obuch with a gift.

"It has been a pleasure raising our children with you, Mrs. Obuch," Rosenfeld said. "Thank you for the enduring handprint you have put on the hearts and minds of us all."

Although the majority of the evening was dedicated to honoring Obuch, the school board also received an update from Assistant Superintendent Frank Fanelli on the search for Obuch's replacement.

"This is kind of a bittersweet evening," Fanelli said. "I'd like to give you an update on where we are in replacing her. Of course, she's irreplaceable."

Fanelli, with other district officials and volunteers, began the search process in February. The original pool of 227 resumes has been narrowed to three candidates to be interviewed by Superintendent Edward Kliszus next Tuesday.

Kliszus will present his recommendation to the Board of Education at its next meeting June 14.
