Port Chester High School Seniors Display Artwork At First-Time Exhibition

PORT CHESTER, N.Y.-- International Baccalaureate visual arts students, all seniors, held their first-ever art show at Port Chester High School on Thursday evening.

Each of the 20 Port Chester students taking IB Visual Arts exhibited eight pieces in the show, done both in and out of class over the past two school years.

The subject of the students’ art included the skeleton, water, Caravaggio, Goya's "Disasters of War, Pirinesi, family members, short story illustration, illustrated envelopes and crushed cans.

The art utilized various media including pencil, ink, watercolor, papier mache, oil, photography, collage, drypoints, monoprints, acrylic, colored pencils, chalk and charcoal.

IB Visual Arts, taught by April Dessereau, is a two-year course that includes assessments by the students’ teacher as well as external assessments of the students’ portfolios.

"I love the class,'' Dessereau said, while pointing out her students' work to parents, teachers and fellow students.

Three seniors from art teacher Katie Cassolino's digital photo class also had their work featured at the exhibition.

Thursday's show fulfills one of the requirements for year two of the IB Visual Arts curriculum and digital images of each student’s artwork will be submitted for external assessment in order to demonstrate experimentation, exploration, manipulation and refinement of a variety of visual arts activities.

Among the IB students whose artwork was featured were: Jonathan Alarcon, Alexander Blas, Joshua Bonilla, Sonya Chandy, Lesly Diaz, Mathew Grose, Augustine Joseph, Salma Juarez,Emily Maldonado, Emma Manos, Brian Martinez, Ruhi Mathew, Marco Nieto, Jasmin O’Bryan, Nitara Ortiz, Isabella Roca, Pedro Rodriquez, Leslie Salcedo, Tiffany Santa and Maria Vasquez.
