This year, 278 diplomas were awarded to the Class of 2015, including a posthumous honorary diploma for Joseph Touri. The seniors, wearing the traditional white and blue caps and gowns, marched onto the field in Ryan Stadium to the music of “Pomp and Circumstance” played by the Port Chester High School Band. They were welcomed to the 131st Commencement by Senior Class President William Murphy.
The seniors were then addressed by Port Chester High School Principal Mitchell Combs. Combs reminded everyone of what a colorful group the Class of 2015 is, much like the beautiful recent sunsets over the school – a rainbow of vibrant hues that have blended perfectly together during their four years at Port Chester High School. He urged the graduates to live their lives like their yearbook theme of carpe diem, or seize the day, and to make each new day count for something.
Louis Cuglietto, retiring principal of JFK Magnet School, was the keynote speaker. Cuglietto suggested some priorities as the class moved on to the next phase of their lives, including courage, resilience, kindness, a healthy lifestyle, and love and respect for others and for themselves.
He reminded them to be alert to the delicate balance between fun, freedom and responsibility and to “take a stand and ‘be’ someone.” The graduates also heard words of wisdom from Valedictorian Emma Manos, Salutatorian Sonya Chandy and Board of Education President Carolee Brakewood and Superintendent of Schools Edward Kliszus. Diplomas in hand, the joyful graduates tossed their caps in the air before marching off the field to greet their proud families.
