Port Chester High Inducts 58 Into National Honor Society

PORT CHESTER, N.Y. — Port Chester High School inducted a record 58 students into its chapter of the National Honor Society on Wednesday afternoon in front of parents, students, teachers and members of the Port Chester-Rye Union Free School District's Board of Education.

The school received 65 applications, said Edward Waite, National Honor Society adviser and history teacher. Students are selected based on scholarship, leadership, character and service.

"These four qualities are interdependent and essential cornerstones to a life of honor, success and fulfillment," Board of Education President Blanca Lopez said. "You represent the best and brightest in our district."

The induction ceremony marks the beginning of a life of achievements, Superintendent Edward Kliszus said.

"This is about success, and your successes are just beginning for you," Kliszus said. "You need to keep up the effort because the rewards are just beginning."

The four current National Honor Society officers — Lisseth Torres, Emily Magee, Grace Condori and Katherine Ochoa — also spoke on the four pillars of the group.

"Good character is established over time, (and) is achieved, not received," said Ochoa, the group's treasurer.

Port Chester High School Principal Mitchell Combs handed out the certificates and spoke about the honored students.

"I'm so very proud," Combs said. "I've been waiting eight years to hold this event in the auditorium. I'm so very pleased with all of you today."
