PORT CHESTER, N.Y. The Port Chester High School Varsity Cheerleading team qualified for nationals by placing in third out of five teams in their division at the Universal Cheerleaders Association regional tournament on Sunday at Kutztown University in Pennsylvania.
This year marks the third year in a row the team has earned a trip to the UCA National Championships at ESPN's World Wide of Sports Complex in Orlando. The championships will take place on Feb. 11-12, 2012.
"This year, the girls have performed really well," cheerleading coach Chezdis Sanchez-Bors said.
Sanchez-Bors, who joined the team three years ago, made a promise to her team as soon as she began coaching.
"When I met the team I told them that I would do whatever I could to get them qualified for nationals as long as they put in the work," Sanchez said, "That year we placed first at regionals and received first place securing our first ever trip to nationals.
Although Sanchez-Bors acknowledged the girls excitement and feeling of accomplishment, she reiterated the team's focus on the next step.
"The girls are really excited to be going to nationals again," Sanchez-Bors said. "They are happy to be going and feel accomplished but know that there is still more to do."
Sanchez-Bors stated the team's ultimate goal is to qualify for the world championships by placing in the top 10 at nationals in February.
