Last week, Z’inah Brown, 16, of Yonkers surrendered herself into the custody of the New Rochelle Police Department, where she was booked for second-degree murder for allegedly fatally stabbing Valaree Schwab outside Dunkin’ Donuts on North Avenue.

In a joint statement released over the weekend, Schools Superintendent Brian Osborne and Board of Education President Rachel Relkin reminded parents that while there are questions, some questions cannot be answered due to the ongoing police investigation into the fatal stabbing.

“The district is cooperating fully with law enforcement regarding the investigation. District administration and staff continually examine ways to improve security procedures and will continue to do so, consistent with the district mission to provide a high quality and challenging education for every child, in a safe, nurturing environment. The safety and security of our students is, as it always has been, our first priority.”

The stabbing led to multiple threats to the school on social media, which were investigated by police and proven unfounded.

Additionally, the school officials addressed the questions of why a Yonkers resident was attending New Rochelle High School.

“There have been many inquiries as to why the suspect was attending New Rochelle Schools. While we cannot legally make public confidential information about specific students, we can attest that she was legally and properly enrolled as a student in our district.”
