JFK Magnet in Port Chester Holds Book Fair

PORT CHESTER, N.Y. - The JFK Magnet School in Port Chester hosted a PTA-sponsored book fair last week inside a spare room at the school's upper building. This is the fourth year the school has conducted the fair and Terry Taylor, the PTA co-chair, said the event has grown each year.

"This was our longest book fair yet," Taylor said. "The goal is to make sure the kids get their books and the kids really love it."

While the book fair is sponsored by the JFK Magnet School PTA, it is conducted through a partnership with Scholastic that allows for the school to generate revenue for its library. According to Odeite Madeira, PTA co-chair, Scholastic shares 40 percent of the sales revenue with the school below the $2,000 threshold and 50 percent if the school exceeds that mark.

This year the school collected $5,306 in total sales revenue, meaning the school will pocket $2,653 for the event. According to Taylor, the PTA has raised more than $16,000 through book fairs for the school's libraries over the past four years.

"Scholastic offers such a great incentive program," Taylor said. "It's really a win-win for the school."

The JFK Magnet School is divided into three buildings, two for kindergarten through second grade and an additional building for grades three through five. Both Madeira and Taylor said that, if it wasn't for the book fair, the school's libraries wouldn't be anywhere near as strong.

"The PTA is a big supporter of the libraries," Taylor said. "Without the book fairs we wouldn't have the new library in the upper building."

The next JFK book fair will be at the school's Early Learning Center building from Feb. 7 through 10. There will be an evening Read Aloud Literacy Night Event for the ELC kindergarten through first grade students sponsored by the teachers and the PTA on Feb. 9 The ELC Book fair will be open for family shopping during the event.
