World Read Aloud Day is full day’s event where community leaders share their love of reading with students. As in past years, the school has invited members of the Port Chester community as read-aloud guests.
The day began with a reception from 8 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. in the school library featuring guest readers, followed by read-alouds and discussions by the guest readers in each classroom throughout the day. Community leaders visited the classrooms throughout the day.
This year’s guests included Pastor Jim O’Hanlon (St. Paul’s Lutheran Church), Greg Adams (former village trustee), Hattie Adams (Port Chester Housing Authority) Carolee Brakewood (Board of Education trustee), Susan Covino (Port Chester Council for the Arts) and Dolores Obuch (retired King Street School principal).
Marcia Manzueta, special education teacher, and Amy Simmons, fourth-grade teacher, spearheaded the World Read Aloud Day for Edison Elementary.
“Every year, the anticipation for the guest reader is only surpassed by the amazement in our students’ faces when they realize that they are part of a worldwide movement,” said Manzueta.
A hugely successful new addition this year was a student Book Swap, where young readers had the opportunity to exchange and explore new books.
“This was a wonderful opportunity for the students at Edison to be exposed to the joy and accomplishments that others have gained through their lifetime of reading,” said Simmons. “I find it amazingly powerful when we unite to advocate and inspire each other as one community. It is our hope that as this movement grows it encourages us to continue defending the right to read for all children at home and abroad.”
