RYE BROOK, N.Y. The Blind Brook Board of Education honored the district's three retirees on Monday evening at the 2012 Celebration of Teaching inside the George C. Trautwein Theater.
Among the three retirees honored were Judith Mella, social studies teacher for 30 years at Blind Brook High School and athletics coach, and Jim Spano, former physical education teacher and current director of health, physical education and interscholastic athletics. Also honored was special education teacher Lisa Freund who was not present on Monday.
Blind Brook High School Principal Gina Healy introduced Mella and spoke about her impact on the school community.
"She cares about her students and always goes the extra mile for them," Healy said. "I have rarely known someone who has been as strong a mentor to teachers and other coordinators as Judy has been."
Board of education members commended Mella on her passion and dedication to the students of the district.
"Having my kids all having been in your class, I really know that you have the highest respect from the community and especially from your students," Diamond said. "The kids really respect you because you show them so much respect. I can't say enough and I know you will be very, very missed."
Superintendent William Stark said long-time Blind Brook athletic luminary Spano didn't just live history, he made it.
"There's so many people to thank, 38 years is a really long time," Spano said. "Words can not express my sincere thanks."
The board announced that the high school/middle school gymnasium would be named after Spano on Sept. 22.
