Archbishop Stepinac HS Celebrates 65th Commencement

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- Archishop Stepinac High School, ranked as one of the 50 top Catholic high schools in the nation, held its 65th Annual Commencement exercises for the Class of 2015 on Thursday.

School President Rev. Thomas Collins (Class of ’79) presided over the ceremony as 171 students received their diplomas. Parents and other family members, friends and faculty joined in congratulating and wishing the graduates continued success at college and in their future careers.

Continuing Stepinac’s tradition, members of the class of 2015 were accepted into some of the country’s most prestigious colleges and universities.

Anthony Panat and Joseph Terrigno were respectively the valedictorian and salutatorian. Anthony Sassone won the Guidance Award; Joseph DeSanctis received the William Plunkett Award for academic excellence; Shawn Veliyathu earned the Nita Lowey/Congressional Recognition Award and Stephen Adler was presented with the Attorney General’s Triple C Award.

Faculty member Patricia Murphy and seven students— Brandon Coleman, Joseph DeSanctis, John Guaragna, Anthony Panat, Robert Sanders, Shawn Veliyathaand Joseph Terrigno—were inducted into the "Order of the Crusader" for their many acts of service to the school and community “above and beyond the call of duty.” 

The Block “S” awards—given each year to recognize individuals whose contributions have had a meaningful impact on the school—were presented to 12 parents: Patti Avezzano, June Burke, Vincent Finnegan, Thomas Gwin, Diane Jaile, Patti Kilkelly, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Leonforte, John Malone, Laura Mastoloni, Geri O’Toole and Robert O’Toole.

The “Sequere Deum” Award was bestowed on Thomas Martin (Class of ’65). Martin was doubly honored when he learned that the College Counseling Center will be named after him. Joseph Mastolini (Class of ’82) and his wife, Lauren, were honored with the “In Te Domine Speravi” Award.

Also recognized for their accomplishments were faculty and staff members Maria Buda, Joanne Cupertino, Patrick Duffy, Matthew Hogan, Charlotte Newman, Lucy Torelli and coach Joseph Spagnola.
