Courtesy of a grant secured through the Bronxville Schools Foundation, the middle school computer lab is now a resource for cohesion and collaboration amongst students, who will work on unique projects in groups to reach their goals.
According to Middle School Principal Thomas Wilson, students will learn about robotics, computer coding and creating multimedia presentations. There is a new layout and new furniture that promotes group participation, new smart boards and other innovations that will “enhance the experience, as the space is now conducive to group discussions, research and brainstorming.”
“Students are excited to be in this new place, which reflects high-level learning goals backed with high-tech tools,” he said. “It’s truly the most flexible room in the entire middle school. There’s real interest in having students take ownership of what they’re learning and do something innovative with the skills they’re acquiring.”
Other new features in the room include LED lighting, storage units, a complete set of MacBook Pro computers, iPads, Chromebooks, a 3-D printer, projectors, flat screen monitors and other state-of-the-art tools to help students advance their education in an increasingly technological world.
“There’s no aspect of (students’) lives that is not touched by technology,” Wilson added. “Any problem that exists in the world can at least be partially aided by the use of technology. The flexible use of tools like the ones in our lab is part of what is emerging in current definitions of literacy. We want to cultivate student enthusiasm and allow students to make connections they could not see before.”
