HARRISON, N.Y. Harrison High School senior Alijah Webb took her first step to turning her passion for sports into a career by completing a physical education program with the BOCES Walkabout program.
When I first started at Walkabout I wanted to be a photographer, Webb said in a news release from Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES. But then I decided to do my service project for Walkabout in a physical education class at Louis M. Klein Middle School in Harrison and thats when I realized I could combine my love of sports and kids and make it into a career.
Walkabout is a full-year program that serves college-bound juniors and seniors in the Westchester/Putnam region. The goal of the program is to help students develop the confidence, skills and clarity of future direction to be successful in college and life.
Webb, a softball and basketball star at Harrison High, completed her required internship at Bronxville Elementary School. Physical education teacher Jacquelyn Frawley said that Webb did a wonderful job and was able to get the kids back on track when necessary.
Upon arrival it was evident that Alijah had a passion for movement and sport as well as a very nurturing approach to working with children, Frawley said in the news release. She was able to find a way to assist at all levels and the students willingly responded to her feedback. I have no doubt that choosing a career path in physical education is the right move for her.
According to the news release, Webb is enjoying the contemporary issues and cultural studies classes at the Walkabout program because students get to teach the class about their own heritage. Webb is planning to attend college next year to continue studying physical education.
