Classically Renovated Tudor In Bronxville Stays True To Its Heritage

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. -- George Root would appreciate the updates to the Bronxville home he built in 1928 at 15 Greenfield Avenue. He’d also likely be astonished at the detail the current owners took to renovate the classic Tudor.

A Tudor built in 1928 at 15 Greenfield Avenue in Bronxville is listed for $4,195,000. It is listed by Bronxville Real Estate's Tina Adams.

“They touched every inch of the house,’’ Bronxville Real Estate agent Tina Adams said of the current owners. “Everything has been either renovated or rebuilt using the finest materials.”

Adams is listing the 5-bedroom, 7-bath house for $4,195,000. She will host an open house at the home on Sunday from 1-3 p.m.

Root, whose career started in New York City, became one of Bronxville’s most successful architects, along with William Bates, Penrose Stout and Lewis Bowman. The challenge in renovating the property was staying true to Root’s architectural integrity while adding 21st century amenities.

Irvington-baed architect Radoslav Opacic and his team took nearly a year and a half to renovate the home before the current owners moved into it in 2010. “All the mechanics have been completely updated and all of the plumbing and electrics are new,’’ Adams said. “The water heater, boiler, sound system and HVAC system are all new.”

The heart of the home is the custom chef’s kitchen, which includes an oversized island, en suite butler’s pantry and storage pantry. There are two dishwashers, two full-size refrigerators, quartzite counters and a breakfast nook with fireplace. It opens to a family room that includes another fireplace.

The rest of the first floor includes an office, living room, dining room, mudroom and two powder rooms.

Five bedrooms fill out the second floor, including the master bedroom with en suite Calacatta Gold marble tiled bath, complete with Waterworks fixtures and tub. Two other bedrooms have en suite baths and two bedrooms share a large bath with double sinks. The guest suite could function nicely as an au pair suite. The laundry room is on the second floor.

The lower level features a home gym, playroom with fireplace, powder room and storage area. “The space has been exceptionally well-allocated,’’ Adams said.

The house is perfect for entertaining as well as comfortable family living. All of the bedrooms are generously proportioned. “It’s a sunny, light-filled home, which is generally difficult to find in Tudors."

Adams said all of the home’s windows were replaced or renovated. "The new windows are either Crittall steel units or custom Spanish cedar double paned insulated restoration glass with lead taping. The original casement windows in the front of the home have had the restoration glass and true divided lead tape replaced and each have custom wood frame storms’’ Adams said.

The renovations extended to the home’s exterior, where the owners restored the exterior and roof, built a new garage, paved the driveway, added tasteful perennial plantings, an outdoor bluestone terrace, large jungle gym and adjustable basketball hoop.

The end result is a 1920s Tudor with the best features of modern living.

“They took great care to re-build it and remain true to its heritage,’’ Adams said. “There’s not one thing that needs to be touched.”
