PORT CHESTER, N.Y. - When village clerk Joan Mancuso announced her retirement earlier this year, she imagined that by the middle of June she would be lounging on a beach in Wilmington, N.C. Instead, Mancuso is cooped up inside Port Chester Village Hall, answering phones and helping residents fill out marriage certificates.
"It's a constant workflow," Mancuso said. "You've got to be a pretty easygoing person."
Mancuso's last day was supposed to be Friday, June 1, but, because the village has had a difficult time appointing a replacement, she's been asked to stay on a little bit longer.
Originally, Mancuso and her husband planned to relocate to North Carolina, where the two share a second home, four years ago. However, after the economic downturn they were forced to put their plans on hold until now.
"I really enjoyed working for the village of Port Chester, and I've definitely learned a lot over 15 years," Mancuso said. "I was fortunate to have an opportunity to serve the public, that's the main thing."
Although Mancuso was born on the other side of the river in Byram, she considers Port Chester, where she raised her three daughter, home.
"Growing up in Greenwich, it's a much different community," said Mancuso. "In Port Chester, even though we have a large population, there's much more of a hometown feeling."
Although Mancuso is relocating, she will still have roots in the village in the form of family members and friends. When asked what she would miss the most about the village, Mancuso didn't hesitate to say it was the people of Port Chester.
"I really enjoyed the people I worked with and helped serve. Everyone has been very nice to me." Mancuso said.
