More than 1.1 million people lost their lives in the Auschwitz concentration camps, making it one of the deadliest manifestations of the Nazi’s Final Solution plan to commit genocide against the Jewish people.

Today, millions of people around the world remember those who lost their lives in the Holocaust through the United Nations’ designation of Tuesday, Jan. 27 as International Day of Commemoration.
