Thousands Sign Petition To Save Port Chester Firefighters' Jobs

PORT CHESTER, N.Y. -- Eight laid-off Port Chester firefighters walked into Village Hall Wednesday, carrying more than 450 pages of signatures from residents in favor of saving their jobs, according to News 12.

Port Chester firefighters, seen battling a fire in the village in March, have gathered some 4,000 signatures from residents in support of re-hiring the fired paid firefighters.

Due to budget issues, the village fired the eight paid firefighters and kept the volunteer firefighters. Since being fired, the former employees have worked to gain support by starting a petition that would require a referendum for voters to make the decision on whether to keep the firefighters. To date, they have received more than 4,000 signatures, said News 12.

The village has 30 days to respond to the petition. Residents are expected to turn out in force during a village meeting on Monday, added News 12.
